Rippa R10-6 ECO vs R15-5 ECO: Which model to choose?

Every week we get the same question: which model do you recommend, R10 or R15? It's a fair question, because you can spend hours comparing specifications and still not be sure.

Yes, weight, engine, hydraulics, and all the numbers matter. It's worth checking them. However, this article focuses on the practical differences that many buyers only notice once the machine is already on the trailer.

If you want to see the full specifications first, use this link: Choose your ideal RIPPA machine.

Important note about the R10 engine: the R10 model can be ordered with a YOOP diesel engine or a Kubota diesel engine. Aside from the engine choice, the machines are otherwise identical. If information related to the engine appears below, it refers to the Kubota configuration, unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Key differences: a quick comparison

Machine R10-6 ECO R15-5 ECO
Engine model Kubota Z482 or YOOP (diesel) Kubota D722 (diesel)
Number of cylinders 2 (Kubota configuration) 3
Rated power 8.2 kW / 10.98 hp (Kubota configuration) 10.2 kW / 13.68 hp
Main pump type Gear pump x 1 Gear pump x 3
Max. flow 18 L/min (4.76 GPM) 21.6 L/min (5.71 GPM)
Operating weight 1018 kg 1460 kg
Max. digging depth 1833 mm 1807 mm
Minimum transport width 912 mm 983 mm
Pilot control system - 9-way pilot control
Control valve type Mechanically controlled valve Pilot control valve
Practical tip: the specifications tell you what the machine can do. This guide is about what you actually feel on the job: access, stability, comfort, and work pace.

1) Undercarriage and rollers: what changes in practice

Machine R10-6 ECO R15-5 ECO
Track length and rollers 120 cm long, 2 bottom rollers 135 cm long, 3 bottom rollers
What you usually feel More agile, lighter in tight spaces Smoother ride over uneven terrain, calmer under load
Why it matters Great when space and access are crucial Better track support and stability, especially on soft ground

An additional roller isn't just a point in a table. In practice, it often means the machine bounces less on uneven terrain and feels more stable when starting, stopping, and working with a full bucket.

2) Gate test: retractable tracks and real job access

Machine R10-6 ECO R15-5 ECO
Width when narrowed 912 mm 983 mm
Conclusion from practice A more confident choice for very tight entrances Still compact, but can be a tight fit in narrow passages

If you frequently drive through garden gates, narrow passages, or work between buildings, the minimum width can be crucial. A few centimeters can determine whether a job is easy or requires creative solutions with a different machine.

3) Counterweight and balance: not just how much, but where it matters

Machine R10-6 ECO R15-5 ECO
Counterweight 45 kg 143 kg
What you usually notice Compact feel, easy maneuvering More confidence with a loaded bucket, calmer when extending

Balance isn't just a number. It's also about weight distribution and how the machine behaves when you're working at full reach or lifting sideways. The R15 usually feels more stable, especially when the bucket is full.

4) Efficiency: bucket size and work pace with attachments

Machine R10-6 ECO R15-5 ECO
Standard bucket 30 cm 40 cm
Quick coupler Mechanical quick coupler Hydraulic quick coupler
Practical note Simple and reliable, but attachment changes take longer Faster in-cab changes for mixed work

A larger bucket often means fewer passes and fewer cycles when digging, while a smaller one can be more precise in tight spaces. If you frequently change attachments, the quick coupler system's operation is more significant than most buyers initially realize.

Some operators also like the option of working without a quick coupler for certain tasks, as the digging feel can be more direct then. If you show this in your kits or videos, it's worth mentioning as a practical option.

5) Operator's station: comfort is not a luxury, but efficiency

Machine R10-6 ECO R15-5 ECO
Control type Mechanical control, simple and direct Pilot joysticks, lighter hand operation
Who usually chooses this People who prioritize simplicity and ease of use People who work longer hours and want less fatigue

Here, many people make their decision after a short test drive. If you dig for more than an hour or two, the feel of the controls makes a difference between "it's okay" and "my arms hurt by the afternoon."

Verdict: which one suits your jobs?

Choose R10-6 ECO if

  • you often work in tight spaces and access is crucial
  • you want a simple machine without complications
  • you're looking for great value in a compact diesel mini excavator

Choose R15-5 ECO if

  • you prefer smoother operation and greater stability under load
  • you work longer hours and want less operator fatigue
  • you want faster attachment work and more professional controls
Still unsure? The quickest way to decide is to sit in both machines and check the controls for a few minutes. Tell us your entrance width and the type of work you do, and we'll advise on the best choice.
